FORT WORTH, Texas -- A woman's body was found by the side of the road in an upscale Fort Worth neighborhood early Tuesday morning, police say.
The body was found in the 4900 block of Bellaire Drive South in the Overton Woods neighborhood. Fort Worth Police said she was found topless with a gunshot wound. Homicide detectives are working the case, and they are asking for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.
"Homicide detectives are investigating right now, and they stress there doesn't seem to be any immediate danger to the neighborhood," said Sgt. Chris Britt with Fort Worth Police.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has not yet confirmed the woman's identity or official cause of death, but police say she was a white female in her mid-30's. They say that she had no known ties to the TCU area, and they said they are still investigating exactly where and when she was shot.
Police said a man found the body this morning when he was driving by after 5 a.m. He called 911 and waited for police to arrive.
"He was passing by in a vehicle, happened to see this body on the side of the road, checked, believed she was deceased and contacted us," said Sgt. Britt.
Neighbors in the upscale area said it was unsettling news. The area rarely sees crime. "It's just a shock for our neighborhood," said neighbor Jana Bader. "Very, very disheartening."
Bader said she was in bed last night when she heard four popping noises sometime between 11 p.m. and midnight. "I've never heard gunshots like that before, and it became obvious to me very quickly that's what that was," said Bader.
Police said no one called in gunshots, but they are now speaking with neighbors seeking to solve a very strange crime.
"We hope to bring a resolution to this very quickly," said Sgt. Britt.
