ARLINGTON, Texas — Police have arrested a man in the April murder of a security guard at an Arlington bar.
Simon Alejandro Flores Acevedo, 25, was taken into custody Wednesday by the Arlington Police Department in coordination with the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Taskforce without incident for the April 14 murder of Jose Roberto Torres Roque, 41, according to a statement from Arlington police.
Acevedo "intentionally and knowingly shot [Roque] multiple times with a firearm, causing [Roque's] death," according to the arrest affidavit.
The shooting that led to Roque's death was not the first time the two men were in an altercation. According to the affidavit, the link between the two men was a woman who worked with Roque.
Roque worked as a security guard at Amigos Sports Bar, where he became romantically involved with a bartender from February until shortly before his death, according to the affidavit. The woman had recently told Roque she didn't want to see him again outside of work, according to the affidavit.
Police say the woman later met a man named "Alex," later determined by police to be Acevedo, at Amigos and started dating him. According to the affidavit, Roque witnessed the woman dancing with Acevedo at the bar "several days prior" to the shooting, "and became angry over the act."
Acevedo later told the woman he thought Roque slashed his tires, according to the affidavit.
"[The woman] advised several days after [Roque saw the two of them dancing], Alex returned to the bar and informed her that someone had cut the tires on his vehicle. Alex was accusing the victim of damaging his vehicle due to the incident that occurred the night he was dancing with [the woman]," the affidavit says.
Witnesses told police Roque ejected Acevedo from the bar in the early hours of April 13 and a fight broke out between the two men. Roque used pepper spray on Acevedo while in the bar parking lot, according to the affidavit and according to security footage found from the bar.
Around 11:30 p.m. a day later, Roque was shot dead by Acevedo in the Amigos parking lot, police say.
Roque was taken to Medical City of Arlington early April 15, where he was pronounced dead.
According to the affidavit, police used cellphone data and security footage along with witness statements to identify Acevedo as the killer.
Acevedo is currently in the Hunt County Jail pending transfer to Tarrant County.
