DALLAS — Police are searching for the gunman who fired shots into an apartment early Tuesday morning and injured two children in northeast Dallas.
That shooting happened at about 2 a.m. in the 9400 block of Royal Lane at the Colinas Royale Apartments. Investigators say a 13-year-old boy was shot in the neck. His 10-year-old sister suffered a minor injury as their father pulled her to safety, said Stephanie Davis, the children's grandmother.
“They were terrified,” said a man named J.R., who identified himself as the children’s uncle. “They were just terrified.”
Family members say the children were home with their father when the shooting happened. The windows are shattered and the blinds riddled with bullet holes. The doors and walls of the apartments also have bullet holes.
"It was an AK-47," Davis said. "I know that for sure because… it was like a machine gun."
Davis lives just a few doors away from her son’s unit. She said her grandson was placed in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
"He was shot in the back neck,” Davis explained. “Bullet went in through the back part of his neck."
Neighbors say they heard at least 40 gunshots.
The crime has many neighbors in the complex feeling nervous.
“We was scared,” said neighbor Rochelle Smith.
“Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom," said Annie Howard, another neighbor of what she heard. "You could hear everything.”
Both Smith and Howard are parents who, like many, have been watching recent headlines about violent crimes increasing across Dallas. With many innocent teens victims, the women said they want to see change.
“More security,” Smith said.
"Yeah, more security,” Howard echoed.
Police are searching for leads on the gunman.
Family members say the 10-year-old girl is now home recovering from her injuries. The 13-year-old is expected to have surgery to have the bullet removed from his neck, his grandmother said.
