2 killed in wrong-way crash on Bush Turnpike in Richardson

Two people died in a wrong-way crash early Thursday.

RICHARDSON, Texas — Updated at 5:39 p.m. with victim identification.

Two people died in a wrong-way crash that shut down the westbound lanes of President George Bush Turnpike for several hours Thursday morning.

Shortly before 8 a.m., officials reopened the westbound lanes between Shiloh and Renner roads.

Officers were responding at about 2:30 a.m. to a traffic stop involving a suspected drunk driver in the eastbound lanes of the Bush Turnpike near Shiloh Road, according to Texas Department of Public Safety officials.

Troopers then noticed a wrong-way driver in a Honda approaching them, so troopers ran to the concrete barrier and tried to stop the driver in the Honda. That's when the driver crashed head-on with a black Ford Taurus.

Officials said traffic cameras indicated that the driver of the Honda made a U-turn onto the westbound lanes and started driving the wrong way near Midway Road.

The driver of the Honda died at the scene. The driver of the Ford was taken to Medical City Plano and later died, officials said.

The driver of the Honda has been identified as 22-year-old Katherine S. Long of Frisco. The driver of the Taurus has been identified as 53-year-old Joseph M. Wallace of Rockwall.
