2 injured after car crashes into Fort Worth pizza restaurant

The driver might face possible charges of intoxication assault, Fort Worth police said.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A driver might face possible charges of intoxication assault after a car crashed into Greek Pizza and Pasta across the street from JPS Hospital in Fort Worth, police said.

The driver, who has not been publicly identified, and another person were hospitalized after the crash around 10:30 p.m. Monday.

"I was cooking an order and all of the sudden we hear something exploded," said Ali Taher, who owns Burgers N Beyond across the street.

He and other business owners dropped what they were doing and ran outside to help the people who'd been inside.

"The woman came out of the store," Taher said. "She started shouting that someone is under the car, get him out."

A Kia sedan traveling westbound on Allen Avenue crossed Main Street and somehow drove into the restaurant, said Mike Drivdahl, a Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman.

"When our crews arrived on scene, that car was completely in the building," Drivdahl said.

The driver had to be extricated from the car and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Witness video shows the car being pulled out from the restaurant.

The crash is still under investigation.

"We’re also seeing if we need to follow through with some charges of possible intoxication assault," said Fort Worth police Officer Buddy Calzada.

The restaurant has been open for more than 30 years at the corner of Main Street and Allen Avenue. The owner could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Taher, the burger restaurant owner, said it's surprising everyone inside the restaurant survived the crash.

"Even the business owner is alive," Taher said. "It’s a miracle."
