DALLAS — Here's your Right on the Money segment for this week.
The cost of the attack on Saudi oil
After the weekend drone attack on Saudi oil refineries, AAA says gasoline in North Texas has already shot up by about 10 cents per gallon. Some experts predict the price per gallon could rise by as much as 25 cents. If you don’t use a gas app, like Gas Guru or Gas Buddy, now might be the time to download one. They can help you find the best gas prices near you.
The Saudi situation — and the spike in crude prices — could prove to be temporarily beneficial for the Texas petroleum industry, which has been producing a lot, but has also seen a decline in new oil and gas exploration. Last week, the number of active rigs in Texas hit 430. That’s the fewest number of drilling rigs here in more than two years.
Small towns, big plans
News has been spreading about Risland US Holdings breaking ground on a huge residential project around Van Alstyne and Anna, about 50 miles up Highway 75 from Dallas. The latest census data from 2017 shows those two towns combined have roughly 5,000 households currently. This one development, called Mantua, could top that, with 6,000 new homes eventually expected at build-out.
Amazon goes shopping — for workers
Tuesday was Amazon’s "Career Day." Dallas is one of six cities where the online seller-of-everything sought 30,000 new permanent workers. The company says 4,400 people showed up to the career event in Dallas. That's the second-highest total the retailer saw at any of its events across the country.
The jobs pay at least $15/hour and come with benefits and skills training. Even if you missed the event, you can still apply for jobs here.
Pro tip: They want people who seem curious, and who fit their culture. To help you with your homework, find more about Amazon's culture here.
