AUSTIN, Texas — An Austin-based company is finding new ways to deliver food, and its idea has it heading underground.
Pipedream Labs is the company behind the idea.
The underground delivery is modeled on the networks that bring utilities like water and electricity to homes and businesses.
Here's how it works: Someone orders food through an app. Once the order is received at a partner restaurant, the workers load the food through a hatch and onto a robot vehicle. The robot then travels through tunnels and pops up at the desired location.
Officials say the method will hopefully not only create a fast, easy delivery method, but to also help the environment.
"Every single delivery that is happening is potentially taking a car trip and removing it, and you know, that's congestion, that's emissions," Brian Johnson, city manager of Peachtree Corners, said.
Peachtree Corners, outside of Atlanta, will be the first area to try the technology.
