DALLAS — Property taxes have gone up in nearly every major city in the country in the last five years, and the Dallas-Fort Worth area is among the areas where it’s risen the most, according to a new report from Redfin.
The southeastern part of the U.S., particularly Florida, have seen median property tax rates soar since 2019 amid higher home prices, increasing natural disasters and population growth, the report shows.
Researchers analyzed property tax records and listing service data for single-family homes in the 50 most populous cities in the country, comparing house payment data from August 2019 and August 2024.
Here are the areas where property taxes rose most from 2019 to 2024, according to the report.
- Indianapolis, Indiana with a 2024 median monthly property tax payment of $205, up nearly 67% since 2019
- Atlanta, Georgia with a median monthly property tax payment of $239, up nearly 66% since 2019
- Jacksonville, Florida with a median monthly property tax payment of $228, up nearly 60% since 2019
- Tampa, Florida, with a median monthly property tax payment of $250, up nearly 57% since 2019.
- Miami Florida, with a median monthly property tax payment of $367, up 48% since 2019
- Fort Lauderdale, Florida with a median monthly property tax payment of $426, up 48% since 2019
- Orlando, Florida, with a median monthly property tax payment of $262, up nearly 47% since 2019
- Fort Worth, Texas, with a median monthly property tax payment of $508, up 44% since 2019
- San Antonio, Texas, with a median monthly property tax payment of $449, up 43% since 2019
- Dallas, Texas, with a median monthly property tax payment of $573, up 41% since 2019
The Redfin report showed the effective property tax rate, or the average rate homeowners pay as a percentage of their home’s value, is highest in Texas.
Effective tax rates are highest in Austin at 1.8%, followed by Newark, New Jersey, San Antonio, Houston and Chicago, each of which have a 1.7% rate, according to the report.
Property taxes make up 20% of the median housing bill in Austin, more than anywhere else in the country, followed by Newark and San Antonio and Houston at 19% and Fort Worth at 18%, according to the report.
