Logistics company DHL Supply Chain is closing one of its facilities in North Texas, a decision that will impact more than 100 workers.
DHL Supply Chain, a division of German-based Deutsche Post DHL, has plans to shutter its facility at 1613 Hutton Drive in Carrollton on Sept. 14, according to a filing with the state. The supply chain sector is one of five divisions under the DHL umbrella, which include DHL Express, DHL Freight, DHL Global Forwarding and DHL eCommerce Solutions.
The Carrollton plant opened in 2017, marking its second location in North Texas at the time. The 50,000-square-foot facility cost $6.2 million to build.
Employees were notified of the plant closure July 12, according to a Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice filed with the Texas Workforce Commission. The WARN Act is a federal law that requires covered employers to provide employees and the government a 60-day advance notice of large layoffs.
In an email, the company said it is closing as a result of a customer deciding to "transition their business to a new provider."
The closure will displace about 104 workers, including 76 warehouse workers, a handful of forklift operators and other hourly workers. None of these employees are represented by a union.
In the WARN notice, the company said it anticipates “a majority of the associates will transition to a new employer" by the plant closure date.
DHL said it operates 19 facilities, including offices and warehouses across North Texas, including in southern Dallas, Fort Worth, Garland and Lancaster. The company recently moved its e-commerce facility in Grand Prairie to a 220,000-square-foot distribution center in Irving, which was a $57.5 million investment. DHL eCommerce employs about 150 workers at 5320 W. Airport Freeway in Irving, which opened in June.
Because of its "strong network of facilities" in the region, the company said laid-off employees who want to stay with DHL “will have opportunities to do so."
DHL Group is one of the world’s largest courier companies, delivering to more than 220 countries. With e-commerce business on the rise especially after the pandemic, shipping and delivery companies are having a moment. Global e-commerce sales are projected to reach $6.3 trillion by the end of 2024, according to Forbes.
The plant closure marks the second facility closing in Carrollton in recent months. Houston-based Westlake Royal Building Products USA Inc. closed its Carrollton facility in May, impacting around 260 employees.
