FRISCO, Texas — Vault hunters can get ready to take another journey to Pandora. Gearbox Software announced the next game in the Borderlands franchise will be releasing in 2025.

For those uninitiated, Borderlands is one of the highest-grossing video game franchises of all time, coming in ahead of the Mortal Kombat series with 85 million copies sold worldwide. The series is made by Frisco-based developer Gearbox Software, who was recently bought for $460 million by Take Two Interactive

Recently, though, the Borderlands franchise took a major hit in the form of a box office bomb. "Borderlands," the movie adaptation of the game series, featured an all-star cast of Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis, but that was not enough.

The movie had a $110 million budget but only made $22.9 million globally, according to Forbes. It also debuted to a bashing from critics. The film currently sits at a measly 10% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the worst-scored movie of the year.

Fans of the video game series criticized the movie for not being true to the games' story.

On Aug. 20, Gearbox won fans back by releasing a teaser trailer for Borderlands 4.

Right now, not much is known about the new game, its characters, or the story. The teaser trailer opens with a symbol of a flaming bird in space, potentially connected to one of the series' main characters, Lilith.

Then, it shows what appears to be Elpis, a moon and the setting of the game "Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel", floating through space before crashing into an unknown material. That triggers meteorites to hit the planet below, where an unknown character picks up the mask of a psycho, one of the series common villains.

What we do know is the game will release in 2025 on PC, PS5 and Xbox.
