Surrendered dogs may have been euthanized in error

Four dogs that were taken in by Dallas Animal Services were unexpectedly euthanized two days later.

DALLAS — Dallas Animal Services is investigating whether four dogs were incorrectly euthanized.

On December 30, an owner surrendered the dogs to animal officers hoping to find them a better home. Dallas animal activists said they helped with the process, and were promised the dogs — named Faith, Hope, Grace and Love — would be safe.

But two days later, all four dogs had been euthanized.

Dallas Animal Services is investigating whether the procedure was administered too soon, or by mistake.

The agency issued a statement Monday night saying, in part:

"Euthanasia of animals is tough enough for employees. To know that four dogs may have been euthanized in error has devastated staff, and they are also eager to look for ways to prevent incidents like this in the future."

Last year, Dallas Animal Services spent more than $17,000 caring for Bentley, a dog belonging to nurse Nina Pham, after she contracted Ebola. Both Bentley and Pham survived.
