Rise and Shiner: Volunteer logs 2,525 hours of service in one year

David Snellings, a retired medical equipment salesman, volunteered 2,525 hours with the Plano Police Department last year. To put that in perspective that's 525 more hours than a full time job.

PLANO, Texas — Ask anyone who knows David Snellings and they'll tell you he doesn't know how to "phone it in."

His wife, Judy, has witnessed his obsessive work ethic for more than half a century.

"He gives his all to anything he's going to do," she said.

On Friday morning, Daybreak conspired with David's family and the Plano Police Department to pull off a surprise for the department's most dedicated volunteer.

"David's dedication in helping in serve the community goes beyond words," said Chief Gregory W. Rushin, with the Plano Police Department.

Snellings had no idea he would be the focus of a public surprise on live television and was shocked when it was revealed to him surrounded by family and friends.

The outgoing and dedicated community member was uncharacteristically at a loss for words. He thanks his wife and son for their support and the department for allowing him to give back.

"Plano has given me and my family so much and this is just my way of paying it back," Snellings said.

David is a part of Plano's "Citizens Assisting Plano Police." Through that program he helps take care of patrol cars, facilitate community events and just about anything you can thing of to help the department.

Snellings is so dedicated to giving back many of the officers didn't realize he was a volunteer, instead thinking he was a full time employee.

"I think my dad thinks the same thing," Scott Snellings said, David's son.

David said retirement is simply his next adventure and looks forward to giving more of his time to the city he loves, although it's going to tough to beat 2,525 hours a year.
