DALLAS — Texas Monthly named eight North Texas Tacos as some of the 50 best in the state.
Two of those, one from Revolver Taco Lounge and another from Maskaras Mexican Grill are ranked in the Top 10.
Texas Montly's taco editor José Ralat, yes that's a real job title that someone has, ate more than 1,200 tacos from around Texas to form the definitive Top 50 list. Small-town and big-city taquerias are all represented on the list, but when it comes to DFW, Dallas earned the most spots in the Top 50. Ralat, himself, is a Dallas resident.
Ralat traveled 14,000 miles to curate the list and took note of shifting trends in the taco scene, Mexican immigrants incorporating Texas ingredients into nostalgic Mexican dishes.
Revolver Taco Lounge in Deep Ellum was ranked the top North Texas spot, at No. 4, on Ralat's list. He praised owner Regino Rojas for his imaginative, revolving menu of tacos but particularly praised the pulpo al pastor featuring octopus cooked on a vertical rotisserie.
Maskaras Mexican Grill in Central Oak Cliff ranked at No. 9 in the state, according to Ralat. The taqueria is decorated with lucha libre memorabilia and its owner, Rodolfo Jiménez, serves specialties from his home state of Jalisco, Rakat said. He praised the tacos ahogados GDL, corn tortillas filled with carnitas before being deep fried and submersed in salsa.
Other taquerias mentioned in the list are the upscale Don Artemio in Fort Worth, a vegetarian option at Resident Taqueria in the Lake Highlands neighborhood of Dallas and Taco Thursday at Vaqueros Texas Bar-B-Que in Grapevine when the food truck serves smoked barbacoa on a corn tortilla.
