Diner located in historic train station in Fort Worth closing after 14 years

The diner’s last day of operations in the historic train station will be July 27.

FORT WORTH, Texas — T&P Tavern, a diner serving pub fare inside a 1931 train station in downtown Fort Worth, is closing after 14 years, the owners announced this week.

The diner’s last day of operations in the historic train station will be July 27.

"Serving the Fort Worth community has been an honor, and we cherish the countless memories we've made together,” a post on T&P Tavern’s Facebook page reads. “It has been a gathering spot for friends and family, a venue for celebrations, and a cornerstone of the neighborhood's history. Your support, laughter, and stories have been the lifeblood of our establishment, and we are deeply grateful for each and every one of you.”

A spokesperson for Trinity Metro hopes to purchase the property and is discussing the location with a local restaurateur.

In an interview with WFAA, owners Joanne and Nathan Weber said they made the difficult decision to close because the diner has struggled to recover from COVID-19, and they look forward to focusing on family in their new chapter.

"Having done this has been the most pleasurable series of events of our lives," Joanne said.

Longtime customers Don Fowler and Fred Rosett, residents of Keller and Arlington, had taken the train to the diner to gather with friends every Wednesday.

"It’s like Cheers, it really is," Rosett said. "That’s the closest comparison we could give. They do know your name. They know what you drink. They're very personable."

Fowler told WFAA it's a great place to catch the train to Dallas for Stars and Mavericks games.

"We're all sad," Fowler said. "We will miss it. It's been the staple of our lives."

The station was built in 1931 by architect Wyatt C. Hedrick, and service ended at the station in 1967, according to T&P Tavern’s website.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development occupied the building and used it for government offices years later. Then, in 2001, the Trinity Railway Express began commuter railway service to and from Dallas.

Then, in 2005, the upper floors of the station were renovated and converted into condos.
