IRVING, Texas — Simply South was named among the top 50 restaurants in America by the New York Times on Tuesday.
The restaurant opened in 2024 serving vegetarian, south Indian food just off LBJ in Irving. Its online menu boasts over 200 items and the restaurant describes itself as a homage to Indian spices, herbs and vegetables.
The New York Times and its restaurant reviewers appear to agree. Simply South is one of 50 restaurants to earn the title of America's best in 2024. It's the only restaurant in the DFW area to make the list.
Venkatesawara Rao Muttavarapu, Manikandan Ramalingam and Anoop Muraleedharan are the chefs behind the restaurant, which is a breakout success among Dallas' Indian residents, writes Times reviewer Priya Krishna.
"The Sunday scene here speaks volumes: The wait is three hours, the chatter of Telugu fills the space and the tables are full of bisi bele bath, filter coffee and every variety of dosa and idli you can imagine," Krishna writes.
Krishna specifically praises Simply South's unturu thatte idli and their variety of dosa, served with six chutneys and a "sinus-awakening sambar that you’ll want to guzzle from a mug," Krishna said.
