DALLAS — The Dallas Zoo is expanding its operation, and its first step is building a new parking garage.
The zoo broke ground Thursday at 727 S. Ewing Ave., the former site of the hippo lot.
The new garage is the first project of the Dallas Zoo's master plan that was announced in 2019.
Parking is just one aspect of that master plan. The zoo has $30 million to work with from the 2024 city bond, which passed in early May with overwhelming voter support.
With that money, the zoo will revitalize the old monorail section of the park with a new, half-mile boardwalk dubbed "Safari Trail."
Safari Trail will utilize 15 acres of unused zoo land for new animal habitats.
That area is scheduled to open in 2027.
