WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Celebrity pastor and New York times best selling author TD Jakes and MSNBC talk show host Chris Matthews had in hour long conversation in the nation’s capital Wednesday.

Bishop TD Jakes is months away from launching a new TV show – the TD Jakes Show -- set to air in markets across the country.

Lately though the pastor of a megachurch in Dallas, Texas has been talking about his latest research project called “conversations with America.” It is talk about race, the economy and the criminal justice system.

“Some of the people in jail made mistakes that the people that sent them to jail made also," Jakes said.

This is part two of his national survey. He says it is a way to engage Americans on some of the tough topics facing this country.

His research is all about being a good listener and hearing from Americans who come from all walks of life, especially in what so many consider a divided political landscape.

And that’s some of the frank talk Bishop Jakes hopes to bring to his show.

He’s appeared on the Dr. Phil show in recent years and getting his own talk show will give him a chance to in his words, "to inspire and empower the voiceless."

The show will begin taping in July.
