IRVING, Texas — Since April, all eyes have been on a red-tailed hawk and her baby hawk growing up underneath a TxDOT camera, giving North Texas an up-close view.
The nest is perched on State Highway 114 at Rochelle Boulevard in Irving, Texas.
As spring fades into summer, millions of baby birds across the country are leaving their nests. After nearly two months, the baby hawk is looking more like a full-grown bird.
It's not every day, however, that you see the moment they take their first flight.
On Friday, a TxDOT spokesperson told WFAA they expect the baby to fly from its nest in about one to two weeks. You can bet WFAA will have our live stream running and our eyes peeled, waiting for the baby hawk to take the leap of faith.
"Once it flies away, we don’t expect it to return to the nest, based on previous experiences watching the nest," the agency said.
The camera at SH114 has been home to a family of hawks for the past 15 years, according to TxDOT.
"TxDOT considers the Hawks part of our extended family. We still use the camera to keep an eye on traffic, but it’s been a pleasure to also watch this young raptor grow up right in front of our camera," the agency told WFAA.
