After 13 years of service, Fort Worth's official spokespup for homeless animal awareness, Henry, is retiring

Henry emerged as the recognizable face of the Fort Worth Animal Shelter. He worked for a decade as the city's ambassador to increase awareness for homeless pets.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A very impactful career for a North Texas canine is coming to a close.

After 13 years as Fort Worth's official spokespup and recognizable face of the Fort Worth Animal Shelter, Henry is retiring, according to city officials. Henry's story with the Fort Worth Animal Shelter began in 2011, when he was brought to the Chuck and Brenda Silcox Animal Shelter in poor physical health. The staff at the shelter dedicated themselves to Henry’s recovery, and over time, with tender loving care, he underwent a remarkable transformation.

Henry then "emerged as the recognizable face of the Fort Worth Animal Shelter."

Henry served as the city of Fort Worth's canine ambassador to increase awareness regarding the challenges faced by homeless pets. In his role, Henry would accompany former Mayor Betsy Price during visits to local elementary schools as well as participating in numerous other city events.

Henry played a pivotal role in raising over $1 million for the construction of a new medical treatment ward at the Chuck & Brenda Silcox Animal Care & Adoption Center, city officials said. This facility, inaugurated in October 2014, significantly enhanced the shelter’s capacity to provide care for sick and injured animals, ultimately saving more lives.

A retirement party was held for Henry on Saturday, Feb. 17. Henry will officially retire from his position on Friday, Feb. 23, after 13 years of service.
