DALLAS — The Dallas Zoo is mourning the loss of one of their African painted dogs.

Jata, a seven-year-old male painted dog, died June 29 after showing signs of lethargy and decreased appetite two weeks prior, the Dallas Zoo announced Friday.

Zoo officials say they began monitoring and treating Jata after the animal began showing symptoms.

“Despite intensive care, Jata’s condition continued to decline, and he passed away that Saturday afternoon,” the zoo shared in a social media post.

Zoo officials say they’re still awaiting necropsy results to determine an official cause of death, but initial findings indicate acute renal failure.

Jata and his brother Mzingo came to the Dallas Zoo from The Wilds at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in 2019, according to the zoo. Shortly after Jata and Mzingo were introduced to the pack at the zoo, the Dallas Zoo shared the news that the brothers had killed one of their pack mates, an 8-year-old African painted dog named Ola, in an attack.
