AUSTIN, Texas — DFW anglers will soon have the opportunity to fish alligator gar in the Trinity River, The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said in a press release.

The department will open its application Sept. 1 for its annual Alligator Gar Harvest Authorization drawing, the release states. The drawing will allow 150 anglers to harvest one alligator gar over 48 inches from the Trinity River.

Licensed anglers can enter the drawing from Sept. 1 through Sept. 30 using the Texas Hunt & Fish app or online as an individual or part of a small group, the release states. Winners will be notified Oct. 15 and authorizations will be valid through Aug. 31, 2025.

“Fishing for alligator gar on the Trinity River is world-renowned and truly a bucket list item for any angler,” Tim Birdsong, director of TPWD’s Inland Fisheries Division, said.

Anglers may use any legal method to take alligator gar from the Trinity River from the I-30 bridge in Dallas downstream to the I-10 bridge in Chambers County. That section includes Lake Livingston and the East Fork of the Trinity River upstream to the dam at Lake Ray Hubbard, the release states.

Any alligator gar harvested must be reported through the mobile app or online within 24 hours, the release states.

“Gathering data on alligator gar harvest through the Texas Hunt & Fish app and online enhances our understanding of their distribution, sizes and numbers, and helps us maintain the best possible fishing opportunities into the future,” said Birdsong.

A one-fish-per-day limit is placed on alligator gar statewide except for Falcon International Reservoir where the limit is a five-per-day bag limit and possession limit of 10 fish.
