HOUSTON – In the 1989-1990 season of Sesame Street, Barbara Bush became the first First Lady to appear on the children's show.
She appeared with Big Bird, the County and several kids, reading Peter’s Chair.

While in the White House and later back home in Houston, Mrs. Bush promoted family literacy. It was a primary focus of hers, and she played an integral role in advocating for the passage of the National Literacy Act of 1991. Among her many volunteer efforts, she visited Houston schools to read to children.
The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation continues in her honor.
