Scarborough Renaissance Festival bakery draws crowds every weekend

For 14 years, the head baker has been serving up his own twists to his family recipes.

WAXAHACHIE, Texas — As head baker at the Scarborough Renaissance Festival, Vandal Van Camp says there is a family atmosphere that makes him feel right at home.

Except here, the pastries are wild. And his kitchen is unique as well.

"Nowhere have I been treated as nicely and received as warmly as I have right here at Scarborough Renaissance Festival," he said. "It's actually like a whirlwind and time disappears."

His booth at the festival is one of a kind.

For 14 years, he’s been using long-time family recipes to keep fair-goers fed. In fact,  Both his grandfathers were from Germany and many of his recipes started out with their measurements and, of course, Van Camp’s own twist.

"We've got our scratch-made brownies, and our fruit bars and here's the blueberry blitz kuchen. Which is my grandfather's recipe for a German lightning cake," he said, guiding me around a table full of sweets.

"These sausages come from Muenster, TX from a tiny German sausage manufacturer so it's not like the box serve whatever."

It’s draws big crowds: thousands of customers every weekend. And while they try to keep the line going quickly, some might have to wait up to 30 minutes.

Even if you’ve never stepped foot into the world of Renaissance Festivals, let this be your “why.” It's been running since early April and it'll stay open until Memorial Day (May 29).
