Richardson native takes American Idol stage

"He walked all the way back. They were taking off his mic. It was over," his father said. That is, until the production crew chimed in and called for a re-vote.

RICHARDSON, Texas — Jack Blocker is one of two contestants on American Idol representing North Texas.

The Richardson native received a golden ticket to Hollywood after trying out for the ABC singing show. Well before American Idol came calling Jack grew up in North Texas area. He went to school at Trinity Christian Academy in Addison and that's where he met, and later married, his wife, Georgia.

"She has the full context of the journey," said Blocker, who has been married to his wife for more than two years.

It is a journey in music that started unconventionally late for Blocker. He was 17 years old when he decided to pursue music. His foray into music even surprised his parents.

"He was a really shy kid, like crazy shy," said his father, Truman Blocker.

Jack Blocker's parents, Truman and Caryn, describe him as an adventurous kid who loved sports and relies on his faith, but say Jack also loves art and writing, and music was the next logical step. In 2022, Jack Blocker and his wife would go all-in and head to Nashville to achieve his dream of a music career.

"It was just to get a little closer to the action, nothing against Dallas. When you're going for it in music, there's a lot more losses than there are wins," Jack Blocker said.

The self-taught folk singer-songwriter with a love for vintage took a chance on an Idol tryout late last year. The family tells WFAA Jack Blocker was the second to last audition from the Nashville area. Two of the three judges initially voted against Jack moving forward in the competition.

"He walked all the way back. They were taking off his mic. It was over," Truman said.

That is, until the production crew chimed in and called for a re-vote. Jack got his second shot, and with it, a golden ticket to Hollywood.

"I came back out and I was still trying to process that I lost," Jack Blocker recalled.

Jack Blocker says the ups and downs of being on the Nashville scene and the music industry has helped him manage the rollercoaster of emotions that come with being on the singing competition show.

His parents and his three sisters have plenty to be proud of. Jack is living his dream and the world now gets to watch him on his journey.

"We are so proud but not because he's in the spotlight. We're just proud of him...like his character," said his mother.
