Plano quilters team up to give back to kids in need

The Stitch House in Plano will give the quilts to Jonathan's Place in Garland.

PLANO, Texas — What kind of people party at 10 a.m. on a weekday with nothing to celebrate?

Quilting people, that’s who.

“You would be surprised how many weekday, 10 a.m. parties we have here at Stitch House,” said Jessica Bermudez, the Plano store's owner.

“Sometimes on a normal business day, without a party, it gets crazy,” quilter Peg Martina said.

“We’re having a good time and we’re doing a good thing,” said quilter Rose DeBoer.

Aside from the fun, the reason they’ve all come to the Stitch House is to make quilts, just so they can give them all away. They plan to donate them to Jonathan’s Place, a nonprofit in Garland that provides shelter to children who have been abused and neglected.

“When they go into these emergency shelters, they are usually left with nothing,” Bermudez said.

That’s why Bermudez wanted to do something. She sent out an invitation, and dozens of quilters responded.

Every thread, needle and piece of fabric is on their own dime and their own time.

“It’s not about us, it’s about helping other people,” Bermudez said. “To me, there’s no value you can put on that.”

A quilt takes hours, sometimes days, to complete. These quilters believe for every kid who receives one, that kind of investment speaks volumes.

“I think it says somebody out there cares and there’s hope that people do care for me,” Martina said.

“Someone loves them,” DeBoer said. “Someone that doesn’t even know them loves them. I think that’s a powerful message.”

Certainly, a reason to celebrate.

The group will continue quilting Friday and Saturday. For more information or how to help, click here.
