UTA invites you to see the moon up close

International observe the moon night is Saturday. Here's where you can go to get an up-close look at the moon.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Throughout history, some incredible pictures have been taken of the moon.

“Seeing with your own eye is a lot different than looking at a picture,” said Levent Gurdemir, director of the UT Arlington Planetarium.

This weekend, the university is inviting guests to do just that. Saturday is International observe the moon night.

In partnership with NASA, the recently-opened UTA Observatory on top of the Park Central parking garage is welcoming guests to see the moon as they’ve never seen it before.

The goal is to unite the community and spark curiosity.

“The first reaction is, ‘Wow, I cannot believe my own eyes. I want to see it again,’” Gurdemir said.

The free event starts at 8 p.m. and is open to the public. Guests will be able to capture their own images, but Gurdemir said a camera can’t captivate the same as your eye.

“It feels like we are actually flying on the moon’s surface,” he said. That’s how good it looks.

There may be a chance to see Saturn too, which he said is also often breathtaking.

In other words, whatever guests see, whether the moon or a distant planet, they’ll almost certainly leave with a twinkle in their eye.
