FORT WORTH, Texas — Sometimes life throws you punches that knock you down and make you stronger at the same time.
"It takes your breath away. You just don't know what to do," said April Goodwin.
And for Apryl Goodwin that's just what happened last January when she got really, really sick.
"I couldn't sit, couldn't lay down, couldn't do anything. So I went to the emergency room and they found a mass in my right ovary and it was pretty big," said Goodwin.
After finally landing a doctor's appointment Goodwin learned she was diagnosed with uterine cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 66,000 women were diagnosed in 2023. Uterine cancer is the fourteenth leading cause of cancer death in the United States.
"You have uterine cancer and the next step is surgery, the hysterectomy. There's chemo, there's radiation. You get six chemo, you get 30 radiation."
Overwhelmed with a long list of upcoming appointments she asked for a ride on the Nextdoor app.
"I read the post and I just immediately thought that I could help," said Lyn Story.
Like the hearts on her Valentine's tree at home, Lyn Story decided to show Goodwin some love and come to the rescue of a stranger.
"We decided that we should all meet first. I asked them to come outside because I didn't want to go into a stranger's house," said Story.
Since they met, Story has taken Goodwin to every chemo and radiation appointment.
"She is my guardian angel. She has helped me fight cancer. I can't do it alone," said Goodwin.
That's because when it comes to this kind of fight they are better together.
