DALLAS — A chance encounter in a dumpster turned into an opportunity to share the wealth for a North Texas non-profit.
Jack, who asked to have his identity limited for privacy, recently donated $10,000 to the nonprofit Texans on Mission, which provides disaster relief to communities across the country devastated by natural disasters. The donation itself is generous, but the circumstances surrounding it are even more amazing.
Jack found a sheet of first-edition holographic Magic: The Gathering cards in a dumpster in 1999. The cards were some of the first ever printed in the U.S., according to a social media post from Texans on Mission. Jack didn't get the cards appraised until 2023 when all of his emergency funds were stolen from his van, the post reads.
“All my life I’ve never had much, and I don’t care because I’m happy,” Jack said.
After he was robbed, he asked God for a "little nugget," which he found when he sold two of the cards a year later, according to the post. It turns out, early edition cards can be worth tens of thousands of dollars. He donated a portion of the money to the nonprofit.
“I told God I’m going to try to be right with the money,” Jack said. “(Texans on Mission) are doing the right kind of stuff.”
