VALLEY VIEW, Texas — A typical date night might consist of dinner and a movie.
But what about dinner and a sloth? It’s an experience guests can get at the Whitehorse Steakhouse just about an hour north of Dallas.
The steakhouse is part of Oak Meadow Ranch in Valley View and every weekend guests can get a five-course meal before interacting with the 12 species of exotic animals on the property.
“This encounter is like no other, I can promise you that,” said Kristen Navarro, who runs the place with her husband and chef, Eduardo.
Kristen started the ranch four years ago after approaching her father, and owner, Allan Watt with the idea.
From lemurs to kangaroos and camels to cats, nearly 60 animals call the ranch home. Dinner guests can interact with most of them, including a sloth, by making a reservation.
However, dinner is not required to see the animals. Guests also have access to the critters by booking a night in one of the cabins or scheduling a visit during the day.
Navarro says by being on the ranch, visitors go home with a lot more than just great pictures of cute animals.
“Sometimes it’s even healing for people,” she said. “It truly is.”
“It’s unlike anything else you’re going to find,” Watt added.
In addition to the animals, the ranch has axe throwing, hiking trails and venues that can be rented for special occasions.
