PARKER COUNTY — Inspiration comes in many forms, and for Millsap veterinarian Craig Sweatt, it's a two-year-old Shetland pony.
"I've become very fond of him," Sweatt said.
Evander the pony and Craig have only known each other since February, but Evander's face tells a long story of survival. It's a story that wouldn't have happened without Craig.
"It just didn't appear this animal wanted to die."
On Feb. 3, Parker County animal control officers found the pony wandering down a road in the city of Azle. Deputies believe he had been viciously attacked by dogs.
"The dogs were every bit as big as he was," Sweatt said.
Evander's ears were gone and tissue was torn from his face.
Until Craig stepped in, Euthanasia was the only option.
It's now more than a month-and-a-half later, and Evander is close to a full recovery.
As for his previous owner, deputies charged him with cruelty to livestock. They say the attack could have been prevented if the pony was properly contained.
