BOSTON — A few days ago, the Dallas Mavericks faced what seemed like an insurmountable challenge: coming back from a 3-0 series deficit.
Has it ever been done? No.
Is it impossible? Also, no.
And no one knows that better than Boston.
Boston is a city of history and if you ask Bostonians to spill the tea, they might go a little overboard when talking about one of the most defining moments in the city’s modern history: the battle of 2004.
Remember that one?
“I do remember 2004,” said George Jodaitis. “Very well.”
“No one here could ever forget in 2004 what happened,” said Glen Cunningham.
So what happened in 2004?
“What happened?” Richard Profita said. “History.”
“Best comeback ever,” said Ismael Velez.
Ah, yes, the 2004 American League Championship Series.
The Boston Red Sox faced the New York Yankees and the winner advanced to the World Series.
History, however, wasn’t with Boston.
“We were down 3-0,” Cunningham said.
No team down 3-0 had ever come back to win a series, until 2004.
“We came back,” said Velez.
“Definitely a miracle,” said Jason Rodriguez.
“And the next thing you know, we’re in the World Series and we win,” Ryan Labrie said.
“We needed to break the Curse of the Bambino and we did it,” Jodaitis said. “We did it baby.”
Down 3-0, only to win not just one game, but four straight, even though it had never been done before? It’s possible for a team to do that? Perhaps a team like the Dallas Mavericks?
“I wouldn’t go that far,” said Derek Ananian.
“I’m telling you they don’t have a chance,” Jodaitis said.
“They do not have any chance of winning the championship,” said Jeanne McCutcheon. “They don’t.”
“Night night,” Rodriguez said.
“It’s done,” said Velez. “Over. Adios. See ya. Goombahs.”
Fair enough, but if Boston spends so much time focused on its history, the Mavericks may have a title in the near future.
