DALLAS — Country music superstar Keith Urban has been playing arenas for decades at this point.
Last time he performed in Dallas, in fact, he did so at the American Airlines Center -- home of the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars, and a venue with a capacity of around 20,000 people -- as the final American stop on his Graffiti U World Tour back in 2018.
So this news comes as a bit of a shocker, then: On Friday, May 3, Urban will play a pop-up show at the Deep Ellum venue Club Dada. Its capacity? Oh, around 400.
Urban announced the surprise show on social media Thursday -- giving fans less than 48 hours' notice about the gig. Not surprisingly, tickets to the show sold out fast, although a handful of tickets can still be had through giveaway contests on KSCS-FM New Country 96.3 on Friday.
Urban was already slated to be in Texas this weekend to play the iHeartCountry Festival on Saturday, May 4, at Austin's Moody Center alongside Jason Aldean, Jelly Roll and others. But it's a collaboration with another rising country performer that's to credit for the short-notice Dallas show.
Urban shared on social media that he booked the performance to celebrate the release of his new single "GO HOME W U" with the Louisiana-raised Lainey Wilson. The duet, which earned its release Friday, is about a tryst born from a raucous night out at a dive bar -- making the venerable Club Dada, in Urban's words, "a setting that is perfect for the song" as well as a throwback to the gigs he played in his career's earliest days.
Club Dada, which opened in 1986, is among Dallas' most storied music venues, having served as a springboard for Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians back in the '80s and still standing as a frequent stop for touring bands on the rise.
"GO HOME W U" isn't the only collaboration Urban's been working on of late. He also worked with Snoop Dogg for a song called "Let It Roll" for the new Garfield movie that drops later this month.
