DALLAS – Dallas’ own Deidra Roper, known by many as International DJ Spinderella, made personal history this week during a brief break from touring and weeks before being honored by VH1.
Roper, a New York Native, has called Dallas home for over a decade.
DJ Spinderella and her daughter, DJ Christy Ray, performed a set together for the first time at the Beauty Bar in northeast Dallas’ Lower Greenville area. Both mother and daughter took a moment to speak with News 8 about the epic event.
“I have known that I wanted to DJ since I was 4 or 5 years old," said Ray. “My mother has always encouraged me to be myself and do what I love.”
Spinderella could not stop smiling while bobbing her head to the tunes Christy played in the background. The two cheered one another on with each mix. Spinderella could be seen among energetic clubgoers, with her hands in the air, encouraging her daughter and protogé.
“To have a daughter that dares to take a risk and follow her dream is a dream fulfilled for a mother,” Spinderella said. “But to have her dream be what you do is another level of pride and joy.”
Another accomplishment Spinderella can add to her repertoire is being named an honoree for this year’s VH1 Honors -- a show returning after six years to pay tribute to female trailblazers in hip hop.
This year’s honorees are: Rapper Lil’ Kim; producer and artist Missy Elliott; producer, actor, and rapper Queen Latifah; and Salt N Pepa with DJ Spinderella. VH1’s Hip Hop Honors airs live Monday, July 11th. For more information, click here.
“This is such a privilege. It is epic,” Spinderella said. “We are all women. I am honored.”
Spinderella returned home recently while on tour with Salt N Pepa to headline the “I love the 90’s Tour.” The tour includes other popular 1990’s acts: Rob Base, Tone Loc, Kid N Play, Coolio, All 4 One, Color Me Badd, Kool Moe Dee and Young MC.
Spinderella told News 8 that the tour may return to Dallas before it ends.
