DALLAS — Oliver Stone, the legendary Academy Award-winning filmmaker, will come to the historic Texas Theatre in October to host screenings of four of his movies -- three of which were filmed in Dallas.
Stone is perhaps most well-known for his conspiracy-laden political thrillers -- mostly notably his sprawling 1991 epic, "JFK", which was filmed in Dallas and tells the story of New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison's investigation into what really happened when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 at Dealey Plaza.
Of course, since the Kennedy assassination happened in Dallas, much of the film was shot here. The Texas Theatre, where the movie will be screened on Friday, October 4, was also a location in the film, as it was where Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested after the assassination. "JFK" would go on to receive a number of Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director noms, and eventually won the Oscars for Best Cinematography and Best Editing.
"JFK" isn't the only Dallas movie Stone has in his filmography, though. Screenings of two other movies filmed in Dallas will take place at the Texas Theatre as well: "Talk Radio" and "Born on the Fourth of July."
"Talk Radio" will be screened in 35mm while "Born on the Fourth of July" will be a 4K restoration. In "Talk Radio," Eric Bogosian plays a controversial Dallas radio personality who becomes overwhelmed by the hatred surrounding his program as it's about to go nationwide. "Born on the Fourth of July" is an epic, Tom Cruise-starring biopic on the life of anti-war activist and Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic; it received eight Oscar nominations, and Stone won Best Director for the movie -- his second time winning the award after "Platoon."
In addition to those three movies, Stone will also host two 30th anniversary screenings of "Natural Born Killers," his 1994 film starring Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis as lovers-turned-serial killers in a script based on a story by Quentin Tarantino. Those screenings will happen simultaneously on Thursday, October 3, with one being in 35mm and the other a digital version.
Each screening will also feature a live conversation between Stone and the Dallas-born film critic Matt Zoller Seitz, who wrote the book "The Oliver Stone Experience" about Stone's life and work.
Tickets will be sold to each screening individually, but the theater is also offering a weekend pass option that includes access to all four screenings, plus a special book signing for "The Oliver Stone Experience" on Friday, October 4.
The series will last from October 3 through October 6. For a full look at showtimes and to buy tickets, look at the Texas Theatre's calendar here.
