PLANO, Texas — The Angelika Film Center in Plano has closed after 20 years, the arthouse theater chain announced Thursday on Facebook.
"After decades of proudly serving filmgoers in the Plano community, it is with much regret that we must advise you that the Angelika Film Center in Plano has closed," the post reads. "For the last 20 years, it has been a great honor, as the manager of the Angelika Plano, to present area audiences with not only the best in independent and specialty film, but also the best in global cinema."
The post cites economic challenges as making it impossible for the cinema to sustain its tenancy in Plano.
Angelika theaters are known for playing a number of lesser-known independent and foreign films not normally played at larger theaters and also host special screenings of older classic films as well.
The Angelika Film Center in Dallas at 5321 E. Mockingbird Lane remains open.
This isn't the first Angelika to close in Texas, the the theater chain's Houston location closed all the way back in 2010.
The announcement of this closure comes on the same day as Alamo Drafthouse Cinema's announcement that it would be closing all six of its locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area after filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
“We are deeply saddened to find it necessary to take this step. We are grateful to all our employees who put in the work, day in and day out to produce a special movie-going experience and to our many loyal customers for whom it was a pleasure to provide such a special experience,” Alamo Drafthouse said in a press release.
