GRAPEVINE, Texas — Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is opening up one of its seven runways to host a 5K run on the airfield this fall, the airport announced.
Runners will 'fly' down one of the airport's runways while planes continue taking off and landing at the world's third busiest airport.
The event will celebrate DFW Airport's 50th anniversary, according to a press release from DFW Airport. The run is scheduled for Oct. 5 on runway 13R/31L, the release states.
The runway is 9,300 feet long and will be temporarily transformed into a 5K race course.
The race won't disrupt normal flight operations, the airport said. Flights will continue to use the airport's six other runways.
"We're excited to open a part of our airfield, allowing our community to experience their airport in a truly unique way," Maruchy Cantu, DFW’s executive vice president of administration, DE&I, said.
Registration costs $75 and participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt and medal. The race will be professionally timed. Those 18 years and older can register now here.
No spectators will be allowed near the course, the release states. The race has a limited capacity and is expected to sell out quickly.
