FC Dallas' Rocha, coach settle dispute
11:17 PM CDT on Wednesday, September 3, 2008
FRISCO – FC Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman said an "internal matter" with midfielder Andre Rocha is under control.
During Saturday's 1-1 draw in Kansas City, Rocha walked directly to the locker room after Hyndman subbed him at the 66-minute mark for rookie Bruno Guarda.
"He's been very aware and understanding of the issue," the former SMU coach said of Rocha on Wednesday. "What we wanted to do was to take care of it internally."
Rocha's refusal to sit on the bench for the rest of the game didn't impress Hyndman. It wasn't clear whether the Brazilian playmaker missed a mandatory training session at the Michael Johnson Performance Center in McKinney on Monday or whether the coach had suspended him.
"I thought I was doing well in that game, and [all of a sudden] I was subbed in," Rocha said. "We talked yesterday [Tuesday] and resolved our differences. ... I was feeling well in the game and wasn't tired."
The team was down to 10 men, and it was a tactical substitution in response to the ejection of defensive midfielder Pablo Ricchetti, Hyndman explained.
However, the trend in the last three matches has been Guarda, an offensive midfielder, replacing Rocha in the right flank during the same 60-minute span.
Hyndman also claims that Rocha isn't moving enough forward into the attacking third.
Rocha, a starter in all 20 games he's played, scored a brilliant 35-yard goal – his first in MLS – and the lead lasted until the 92nd minute when Jimmy Conrad tied the score. Rocha leads the club with six assists, and his 33 shots attempted are second in offense to Kenny Cooper (13 goals and 89 shots).
For Hyndman, it's a closed chapter. For Rocha, it's a clear message.
"I am not a coach that holds things against players," Hyndman said. "It's an issue taken care of; we moved forward [but] we just can't have the same situation happen again a week later."
Awaiting U.S. national team call-up: U.S. men's national team coach Bob Bradley will announce in the next couple of days his roster for the next World Cup qualifier in Cuba, U.S. Soccer spokesman Neil Buethe said.
Hannover 96 defender Steve Cherundolo is out because of a red-card suspension suffered in Guatemala last week, which opens a window for Dallas defender Drew Moor, who's already played a qualifier against Barbados last June and assisted one goal in a friendly against Mexico last February.
"It's on my mind. I hope to get a call," Moor said.
Injuries update: Dutch left midfielder Victor Sikora underwent surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee. Hyndman said he is expected to be out for at least four to six weeks. ... Defensive midfielder Marcelo Saragosa, who's been nursing a right groin injury, trained with the team Tuesday and might return Saturday against Columbus. ... Central defender and team captain Duilio Davino is still recovering from a left toe fracture and will be out for Saturday's match, Hyndman said.
