MusicCares names
SMILEY N. POOL/DMN Dallas keyboard prodigy Roderick Carlton Demmings Henley Person of the Year
Don Henley will be honored as the 2007 MusiCares Person of the Year. Mr. Henley, 59, will receive the award Feb. 9 at a gala dinner and concert in Los Angeles, the Recording Academy and the MusiCares Foundation announced Monday. The annual gala is among the festivities that will lead up to the 49th annual Grammy Awards, which will be presented Feb. 11 at the Staples Center. The award show will air on CBS. Mr. Henley, a founding member of the Eagles and a solo artist, was selected for his achievements as a musician and for his philanthropic work benefiting environmental issues and musicians' rights and concerns. MusiCares, established by the Recording Academy in 1989, provides assistance to individuals in the music industry during times of need. Mark Davis goes to D.C. for talk-radio summit
Mark Davis of WBAP-AM (820) will be among talk-radio hosts broadcasting live today from Washington, D.C., as part of a Bush administration-sponsored talk-radio summit. White House officials invited dozens of radio talkers from across the country to participate; administration officials are expected to be on hand for interviews. Mr. Davis will broadcast from 9 a.m. to noon. Sean Hannity, whose syndicated show airs on WBAP, is also taking part and will be on from 3 to 6 p.m. Tyler Cox, program and operations manager for WBAP, said that the station is paying for the Davis trip and that, "We maintain editorial control of the show – that's important to note." Dallas prodigy to appear on 'From the Top'
Twelve-year-old Dallas keyboard prodigy Roderick Carlton Demmings will play classical and jazz pieces for a TV taping of the music show From the Top on Thursday in New York's Carnegie Hall. A 13-episode PBS television version of the popular radio show that showcases young musical talent will air in 2007. Roderick will perform Chopin's Etude in G-Flat, Op. 10, No. 5 (the "Black Key") and Jack Gale's Harlem Express. The jazz piece will also feature young musicians from Chicago and New York. The Chicago Children's Choir is also on the bill. A seventh-grade student at St. Mark's School of Texas, Roderick studies piano with John Sherow-Tatum of Richardson and pipe organ with Annette Albrecht of Dallas; he's also done two summer sessions at Interlochen Center for the Arts in northern Michigan.
