In last week's primary, Democrats doubled their turnout in Texas over the last four years.

Inside Texas Politics began with one of the most-watched congressional races in the March 6 primary – Democratic House District 32. Attorney Collin Allred, a former HUD official, will now meet Lillian Salerno in a May 22 runoff. Salerno is also an attorney and a formal presidential appointee. Last week, Allred got 39 percent of the vote and Salerno received 18 percent. Both candidates appeared together to discuss their next race. They joined host Jason Whitely and Bud Kennedy of the Star-Telegram.

STATEWIDE

In last week’s primary, Democrats doubled their turnout in Texas over the last four years. However, Democrats still lag behind Republicans. Ross Ramsey, the co-founder and executive editor of the Texas Tribune, discussed whether the Democrats strong showing at the polls can be called a blue wave. Ross also talked about the mixed results in Governor Greg Abbott’s and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick’s involvement in legislative races.

Reducing gun violence is on a lot of minds right now, especially with the National Rifle Association (NRA) convention coming to Dallas in May. This week’s My Voice, My Opinion contributor, Cydney Walker, of Coffee and Politics 101, said you can't put all the blame on the NRA.

Although Dallas Democrats re-elected Carol Donovan to lead the county party, they openly talk about the conflict and divisions within their party. Donovan joined host Jason Whitely to discuss how she plans to unite her fellow Democrats.

They also discussed how they expect the race between Senator Ted Cruz and challenger Congressman Beto O’Rourke to unfold, and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick’s assertion that the age of “liberal Republican” is over.
