Roy Oliver moved to state prison in Huntsville

Fired police officer and convicted murderer Roy Oliver has been transferred to a Huntsville, Texas prison.

Roy Oliver, the former Balch Springs police officer convicted last month of murder in the killing of an unarmed 15-year-old, has arrived at a state prison to begin his sentence.

Oliver was moved from the Dallas County Jail and turned over to Texas Department of Criminal Justice authorities at the James H. Byrd Unit in Huntsville, Texas, where he’ll start serving a 15-year sentence.

The Byrd Unit is a diagnostic intake facility, meaning prisoners are often taken there for information gathering before being transferred to another prison. The Byrd Unit has a capacity of over 1,300, though and currently houses just over 1,000 prisoners, according to information in a Texas Tribune database.

Oliver was convicted of murder on Aug. 28 for the fatal shooting of Jordan Edwards after a party in April of 2017. Edwards was in the passenger seat of a car that was discovered to be driving away from Oliver when he pulled the trigger of an AK-15 rifle.

The jury arrived at the guilty verdict after about 13 hours of deliberations following eight days of testimony. He was handed a 15-year prison sentence the next day.
