Farmersville couple, married nearly 60 years, die in house fire

The victims were identified as Delvin Harrison Sergent, 86, and Betty Lou Sergent, 88.

FARMERSVILLE, Texas — An elderly couple were found dead Tuesday morning after a fire broke out inside their Farmersville home.

The victims were identified as Delvin Harrison Sergent, 86, and Betty Lou Sergent, 88.

A neighbor of the Sergents, Loretta Kleinman, said she heard a loud boom before she went outside to see the couple's home engulfed in flames.

Kleinman said the couple's daughter, who lives nearby, attempted to get to her parents.

"[The daughter and her son] broke the windows," she said. "... They hollered for her mom and dad, but it was just too late, I guess."

Family of the couple told WFAA they were proud parents of 4 children, 3 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and were just four months shy of their 60th wedding anniversary.

Chief Mike Sullivan, with the Farmersville Police Department, said police were first to arrive on scene after they received a call at about 4:08 a.m. of a structure fire in the 500 block of Maple Street.

"The house was fully involved," he said of what police saw when they arrived at the scene. "They tried to make entry but there was just too much smoke and fire."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
