Three generations of prom queens

DENVER — It’s something many girls at prom dream of: being crowned prom queen. One Denver family seems to have particularly good luck in that competition.

When East High School crowned Janae Hancock homecoming queen this past weekend, it continued a streak that stretches back more than half a century: three consecutive generations of prom queens. And one of them may look very familiar to people in Denver.

Janae’s mother, Mary Louise Lee, was crowned homecoming queen at Thomas Jefferson High School in 1988. She is now the first lady of Denver, having married Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, whom she’s known since their high school days.

Lee, a singer and theater performer, is also the daughter of another prom queen. Her mother was crowned queen at her high school in Texas in 1955. And that’s not where the connection ends.

“My mom and I wore the same [prom] dress that was made by my grandmother 61 years ago!” stated Lee. She shared the triple-prom queen photo with her friends on social media, saying she’s proud of her daughter for continuing the family’s prom queen legacy.
